What I Read In January

As much as I love the body positivity talk, spreading the love and the rants on womanhood. I also want to show you a bit more of my day-to-day reality, not all the drama!

January was always going to be a quiet month, the lack of money, the blues and the weather all add up to many nights in, snuggled on the sofa under a blanket. I thought I’d give you a review of the books that I got through. Like a little virtual book club! And if I’m honest, I’m quite proud. Four books is insane for me (unless I’m on holiday).

I’ve scored the books out of 5 with teeny, little stars.

The Tin Man - Sarah Winman

⭐️ ⭐️

I’m going to be as honest and candid as ever. I found this pretty painful and slow. I just couldn’t get into it! Bearing in mind it was a short book, it took a hell of a long time to get through. Around the halfway point, it got a little bit more interesting, I brought into the character that was telling the story at the time. It was a book that flitted between characters, as well as past and present tense. Which I found confusing! Not one for me, but Winman did speak about issues such as HIV, which is hugely important.

A Gift For Dying - M.J Arlidge

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

OUTSTANDING! A real page turner and most definitely a thriller. It was brutal and like reading an episode of Luther. But I love a crime thriller and this certainly ticked the boxes. I gasped multiple times.

What A Time To Be Alone - Chidera Eggerue (The Slumflower)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book. It was super easy to read. It’s laid out in a fun, colourful and casual way. Which was the perfect balance for breaking up the context of the book. It made me feel empowered and motivated. A definite coffee table book for when you’re having a gloomy day. You could pick it up at any page and feel like ‘yeah, I’ve got this’.

What Would the Spice Girls Do? - Laura Bravo

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bravo’s humour and wit were the best part of this book. Other than that I found it a little bit of a struggle. I love the Spice Girls, I really do and there are some interesting facts. Too many that riled me about modern day society! However, I couldn’t fully get into the swing of it and I think that was because there’s SO much information packed into just 194 pages, that I could only manage about 10 pages at a time. Which was fine, because this book is perfect as a night stand book. What I mean by this is that you can read a few pages and come back to it in a couple of days time and it won’t make a difference to your memory. All of that said. It’s a definite read for a 90s girl like me. The nostalgia came flooding back!
